Get involved

The Unit is basically a hub where anything could happen, it’s what YOU make of it!  Surprising new things are always happening so keep in touch, join the facebook page here.

Here’s millllions of ways (almost!) you could get involved:

1. Volunteer

Pop in and volunteer with us down in The Unit. You can do this as part of your Duke of Edinburgh Service Award or just to put on your CV. We always have plenty of tasks for volunteers to be getting on with, from updating the website to running the shop!

Our dedicated volunteer hours are between 3.30pm and 5.30pm Monday to Friday and between 11am and 2pm on Saturdays. We’re pretty flexible though, so if these times aren’t suitable, just get in touch!

2. Use our stuff

We’ve got Macbooks and free access to internet, so if you are in town and want to get online come and see us.We also have a semi-automatic badge machine, great for making professional badges for your band or event. Affordable at 30p a throw.

Filmmaker? Free use of our HD camera and tripod for those who are interested in visual media. Perfect for making band videos or recording shows!

3. Cafe Marshmellow

You guys wanted a youth cafe, so we’ve given you one! Our pop-up Cafe Marshmellow springs up once a month to bring you affordable munchies, live music and sometimes some special entertainment. We’ve done a Chinese themed cafe, Italian themed and a spooky Halloween cafe – what’s next? You decide!

Come along to our planning meetings for the cafe every Thursday afternoon from 5pm-6pm and be a part of the youth cafe revolution! Like us on Facebook.

4. Young Reviewers Club

Interested in journalism or writing? Want free tickets to events and opportunities to interview your heroes? Come to the Young Reviewers Club!

We meet once a month in The Unit on a Tuesday between 6pm and 7pm (next meeting is December 6th) where we are joined by a special invited guest who will give you tips and advice. In the past we have been joined by Marie Lennon of the BBC, Roger Elliot (Journal photographer), Eleanor Turney (Arts Pro and A Younger Theatre) and Anne Morris, Arts Editor of the Journal. We hand out free tickets at the end of the meet!

Join us on Facebook to find updates about the next meeting: Young Reviewers Club Facebook.

5. Social Enterprise Qualification –  create a new business!

The Unit are beginning a new qualification for anyone who would like to start their own business. Be an entrepreneur and do something

which benefits the planet or people at the same time. Intrigued? To find out more or to get involved with the first group email info@unitspace.org.uk. We meet every Wednesday evening from 5.45pm. You can read more about it at the Social Enterprise Qualification website.

Teacher? Youth worker? Would you like us to come and tell you a bit more about social enterprise, or train your staff? Email Heather on info@unitspace.org.uk.

6. Unit Records

The Unit run our very own record label/promotions agency for young bands needing a helping hand to find gigs/learn some skills.

Kenny runs Unit Records workshops every Tuesday from 5pm-6pm where we cover an aspect of the music business every week, presented by a special guest. Come along, ask questions, or try something new.

We also organise showcasing events for young bands who are looking for gigs in Salisbury. Email us or join the Unit Records Facebook to keep up to date with events: Unit Records Facebook

7. Make+Do

We’re very creative down in The Unit, so we run creative workshops whenever we can to share our skills and the skills of our volunteers. Workshops from sewing, upcycled clothing, knitting to painting, photography and filmmaking and everything in between.

We don’t have set times or dates for these – they’ll happen whenever our volunteers are free, so keep checking our Facebook page and this website for latest information!

8. Zine

…and because you guys are so creatively talented, we’ve launched a new zine to showcase your work. We accept any art/creative work and will publish it as soon as we have enough submissions to put in a magazine. Bring your work in to the Unit and we can scan it in, or email it to info@unitspace.org.uk. Take a sneak peek at our first issue here.

9. Arts Award

The Unit is a registered Arts Award centre and four of our adult support team are trained Arts Award Advisers (up to Gold level). We can help you with completing your Arts Award.

Our dedicated time for Arts Award advice is on Wednesdays, from 4pm-5.30pm. Pop in to ask any questions or to find out more!

10. Re-Vision

Our awesome architect Tim leads our architecture and design workshop which helps you have your say about the city of Salisbury. What would you like to see be built? Angry about the market square? Come along to our workshops to put your view forward. Take a look at the ReVision Facebook page for latest information.

11. Creative Writing Club

Join Sarah, our lead volunteer for the Creative Writing Club which happens once a month down in The Unit. Need some inspiration? Get hands on with ideas creation and ask Sarah for all of her top tips!

Our next meeting is on November 21st at 5pm-6pm. Beginners are totally welcome – no experience required.

12. Information/Hub of greatness!

Need to find out what gigs are on tonight? Fancy joining a drama group? Just want to pop in and have a chat? That’s what we’re here for! We’re opposite the bus station, so if you’re waiting for a bus and it’s raining – come in and absorb our heat!

WE NEED YOUR IDEAS!!!

Is there something that needs to happen in Salisbury? Great idea for a workshop? Want to lead an awesome project? Get in touch with all of your ideas and we’ll do our best to help you make it happen!!! If you are aged 13-19 The Unit is there for YOU!
